AMD ha presentato al Computex 2008 la nuova tecnologia ATI XGP (External Graphics Platform), finalizzata a estendere le potenzialità dei sistemi notebook in ambito grafico, fino al punto di renderle, in accordo al produttore, "molto vicine a quelle dei desktop ad alte prestazioni".
Per conseguire questo obiettivo AMD ha messo a punto un box che include una gpu ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3800, anch'essa annunciata oggi, e capace di comunicare, da un lato, con il notebook, utilizzando l'enorme ampiezza di banda offerta dalla tecnologia PCI-Express 2.0 (l'interfaccia fisica è frutto della collaborazione di AMD con JAE Electronics, ndr), e, dall'altro, con un numero di device video variabile da un minimo di 1 a un massimo di 4. In tal caso le uscite verso le periferiche di output, come monitor, TV, TV tuner e player Blu-ray, sono implementate mediante HDMI con audio integrato, DVI e USB 2.0.

The additional high bandwidth of the included USB 2.0 connectivity allows users to connect to a wide variety of USB-based devices, including external TV tuners, external Blu-ray players, and much more.

ATI XGP Technology is contained in an external chassis connected to the notebook via a specially designed self-latching, easy-connecting PCIe 2.0 cable from Japan Aviation Electronics Industry, Limited, a leading provider of electronic devices and connectors. Based on AMD’s dedicated research and development, the cable also provides USB 2.0 connectivity directly to the notebook allowing for additional USB functionality. Independently cooled and powered, ATI XGP Technology offers the potential for higher performance than traditional entry-level graphics solutions.
