Con il comunicato stampa di seguito allegato, AMD ha annunciato il chipset per motherboard siglato AMD 890GX, una soluzione che si colloca nell'ambito della serie 8 e che puù vantare il supporto dei prossimi processori a sei core Phenom II X6 e l'integrazione di un IGP, basato sull'architettura ATI Radeon HD 4290 e particolarmente votato per lavorare nell'ambito dell'High Definition (Blu-ray playback a 1080p e dual-stream PiP ovvero Picture in Picture, ad esempio) mediante la decodifica dei formati MPEG2, VC-1 e H.264.
AMD sottolinea il supporto nativo, da parte delle motherboard basate sul nuovo chipset, dello standard SATA 3.0, o SATA 6Gbps, mentre la compatibilità con lo standard SuperSpeed USB 3.0 è ottenuta tipicamente con l'ausilio del controller USB 3.0 di NEC. AMD 890GX supporta inoltre Gigabit Ethernet, HyperTransport 3.0 e PCI Express Generation 2.0.
Questo chipset deve essere inquadrato, al pari di tutti quelli della serie 8, nell'ambito della piattaforma 2010 VISION per i sistemi desktop, che sarà annunciata nella sua interezza nel corso del secondo trimestre dell'anno corrente.
